062 Dice Tomatoes:  Joe Van Dyke Farms Brings Color, Freshness and Variety To Launch of Las Vegas Farmers Market at Springs Preserve

So what do Don Anderson, Colorado River Roasters, Rosiland Gibson, Bloom’n Desert Herb Farm, and Priscilla Van Dyke have in common?

Before entering the business world and becoming valued resources of fine food products they were all educators, teachers and principals.

When you engage with them at any farmer’s market and discuss coffee or herbs or fresh-from-the-field produce, it only takes a second to understand that their dedication to education didn’t end with their retirements from a local school district.

They are wonderful educators who have shifted their focus to not only providing the highest possible degree of product quality but have taken on a slightly larger classroom of students…our Southern California community.  Every person who meets them at a farmers market or visits their businesses becomes, sometimes unaware, their student.

They all independently say the same thing; when it comes to understanding the nature and value of sustainable food, it all starts with education.

At the opening of the new Bet On The Farm Farmers Market at the Las Vegas Springs Preserve on Thursday December 1, 2011, I had my first opportunity to spend some quality time with Priscilla Van Dyke of Joe Van Dyke Farms out of Blythe, California.  With over 850 acres under cultivation, and located (you have to listen to her description) 200 miles from nowhere, she is yet another wonderful resource who brings beautiful products, think greens, from their farm some 3.5 hours away to our community.

Our community needs all the teachers we can support, and after listening to this interview with Priscilla, we think you’ll agree that she’s a great addition to our local farmer’s market.

Hey Priscilla…..loved that lettuce!!!!!!
