Dice Tomatoes – Bruce Nielsen’s Hoop Houses Brings Color and Flavor To The Southern Nevada Desert

Ok eagle eye, you’re right, Bruce Nielsen’s operation in not in the Southern Nevada Desert, it’s in the Southern California desert.  But give a guy a little slack, a little poetic license.  If you had a strong arm you could throw a rock from his amazing operation down the road across the state line into Nevada.

On Monday morning, April 25, 2011, a group of Southern Nevada producers and representatives of the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension drove from Las Vegas south on the I15 to Jean, took a right turn up and over a beautiful mountain pass and then down down the winding road into the flat Sandy Valley and out to visit Bruce Nielsen’s Prime Color’s farming operation.

Like most Soutern Nevadans, I have driven by that small ‘Sandy Valley’ road sign on I15 a zillion times, always at the posted speed limit of course, and without giving a thought as what was there…..if anything.

What’s there will surprise you.

Bob Morris, Associate Professor UNCE, like to say you can grow anything in the desert if you have enough resources.  Bruce Nielsen proves his point.  His wells produce abundant water and he has invested his monetary resources and his time and labor to create an amazing complex of hoop houses that produce an  eye popping variety of colorful bedding plants used by many Las Vegas landscape firms.  But Bruce has also ventured into the production of herbs, beautiful sage, Italian parsley, chive, thyme, lemon balm, rosemary, Etc.  All world class product.

What is most amazing about this operation is how his team controls the internal temperatures inside these poly covered 96 foot long hoop houses.  Heaters warm in winter, big swamp coolers cool in the summer.

Listen in to this Dice Tomatoes Radio episode and you will meet a really member of our community and learn how he and others are creating a true sustainable food movement right here, in the middle of one of the most arid deserts in the world.

Thanks for having us all out Bruce!

Aprill 22, 2011 update From Doug Taylor Regarding New Las Vegas Farmers Market

Doug Taylor and I spoke yesterday, Thursday April 21, 2011, about the status of a replacement market for the closed Dean Martin Drive venue.

He reasured me that the Batali / Bastianic group is still committed to finding a suitable replacement for the market and are working dilegently to bring this to a positive conclusion just as soon as possible. Currently at least two potential sites, the Downtown Ogden Street location and the Springs Preserve, are being evaluated.

Doug hopes to have more postive and substantative information for us in just a few days.
